These informal economies, largely shunned by Europeans, offer opportunities to those in the global South where conditions may be more precarious, encouraging migration.
The organization of the book This book is divided into three parts, reflective of the three aims and arguments just introduced. Part 1 draws on my research with the sanspapiers movement as well as the history of humanitarianism to provide the context for how the governance of immigrants increasingly takes place through practices of care. Chapter 1 tells the story of the political struggle around immigration. It focuses on the sans-papiers movement in order to analyze the context of its emergence and limits and also the rise of a competing complex of institutions and practices of care.
2001; Bourdieu 1999; Bourgois 2009). However, I want to suggest that there is a fine line between recognizing suffering and fetishizing it as the fundamental and only basis of a common humanity. While this book argues that an understanding of suffering as the basis of a universal humanity can result in the obligation to use suffering to barter for membership in the category humanity, we still need a language that can express the experience of pain in all its forms. In this sense, I hope this book opens the way introduction 25 to think about the shape of radical political change centered on equality, change that addresses the suffering of exploitation, oppression, poverty, and hunger as much as suffering from illness or gendered violence.
