The white banding around the eightpointed star was more heavily stitched, with lots more color and a wide variety of sizes of beads, from #15 to #6 and with 4mm and 6mm crystals. I was trying to cover the space with quilting and discovered that I was making ridges as I tacked back and forth from edge to edge. I didn’t want ridges, so from there on I tried to be careful not to work in zigzag lines unless I wanted ridges. Hold the needle in your dominant hand, and with the thread held in your other hand, about ½˝ in from the end, thread the needle. It helps to hold the eye of the needle and the end of the thread over a plain white surface. You can see both the hole and the end of the thread more clearly. I use the back of a business card or the edge of my bead tray. NOTE When threading needles, remember that a needle hole is made with an awl punch; consequently, one side is larger than the other.

It can be variable in width and content or used with all the same size and color of bead. It’s dealer’s choice—dependent only on your imagination and what beads you have available. Wandering path This stitch is accomplished the same way as the herringbone (page 39), except that the lines are not parallel, and you make it up as you go along. The same caveat applies about the length of the lines of beads.
