It was just one of the performances that earned Pavlova her place among the legendary ballerinas of the twentieth century. Pavlova was born into poverty in the Russian city of St. Petersburg in 1881 and began attending the Imperial Ballet Academy at the age of ten. By the time she graduated in 1899 there was a refined and poetic style to her dancing that impressed both her teachers and dance critics.
