Backstage, people milled around all over the place. When Agnes entered Pavlova’s dressing room, her idol was still in full costume, talking to some friends. Pavlova moved toward Agnes and the rest of the group to greet them. Soon Pavlova, Agnes’s inspiration, her idol, was standing right in front of The Long Search for Success her, larger than life. Agnes’s friend introduced her as Kosloff ’s best pupil, and Agnes froze. Pavlova congratulated Agnes, grabbed a bunch of flowers from a nearby basket, and handed them to her, then bent down to kiss her lightly on the cheek.

It was just one of the performances that earned Pavlova her place among the legendary ballerinas of the twentieth century. Pavlova was born into poverty in the Russian city of St. Petersburg in 1881 and began attending the Imperial Ballet Academy at the age of ten. By the time she graduated in 1899 there was a refined and poetic style to her dancing that impressed both her teachers and dance critics. She joined the Maryinsky Theatre as second soloist in 1902, Transformed by a Ballerina kicked higher, balanced longer, or turned faster than Pavlova, but to Agnes physical technique didn’t rate as high as the ability to express passion.

It was a great success and helped to launch all three men in their careers in the motion picture industry. De Mille either discovered or created many stars, including Gloria Swanson. In all, he produced and directed seventy films, some of which helped to solidify the careers of Claudette Colbert, Charlton Heston, and other notable actors. Ever the showman, from 1936 until 1945 de Mille hosted and directed Lux Radio Theatre, which brought the actors and stories of several motion pictures to the airwaves.
