Because of these physical differences between the sexes, many ideas evolved to help explain the perceived differences. Much of women’s leisure was still centered within the home and was a function of family and sex-role expectations. It was not until the social tumult of the 1960–1970s that recreation and leisure for women was perceived as an issue of freedom and equality. Gains in recreation activity for women in North America were reflective of the societal changes in attitudes wrought by continued social reforms based on the revived feminist and equal rights movement, the civil rights movement of the 1960s, and the increased social awareness and commitment to change of the 1970s.
