I believe that occasional use of a regular home oven—the one you use for cooking food—poses no threat to your family’s health, but there are those who would disagree! Toaster ovens are a last resort. The cooking chamber of the average toaster oven is small and narrow, placing the clay in close proximity to the heating elements. Toaster ovens are also prone to temperature spiking. I have used an electric frying pan to cure flat pieces with fair results. Specific temperatures may be set when using electric fry pans.
Instead, use a bamboo skewer for this purpose, gently and carefully easing the clay out. Once the excess clay has been removed, roll light-colored scrap clay through the machine to pick up any remaining bits of clay. The surfaces of the rollers may be cleaned by pressing an alcohol-saturated paper towel or alcohol wipe on them as you crank the machine. Frequent wiping of the lower plates also helps minimize contamination from clay that has been rolled through previously. On my pasta machine, I’ve connected a pasta-machine motor.
